Vivien, in costume for Antony and Cleopatra, listens to the radio in her dressing room at the Ziegfeld Theatre in New York as the winners of the 1952 Academy Awards are announced.

An expression of victory as her name is read out for the Best Actress award.

A congratulatory kiss from Olivier after Vivien won her second Academy Award.

The Oliviers discovered Finch on their Old Vic tour in 1948. Impressed by his performance in an unconventional production of The Imaginary Invalid staged on the floor of O’Brien’s Glass Factory in Sydney, Olivier offered to take the young actor under his wing as a protégé. Encouraged, Finch moved to London with his wife, Ballets Russes dancer Tamara Tchinarova, and daughter Anita in 1949. His long-term contract with Laurence Olivier Productions allowed him to maintain relatively close contact with Britain’s most famous acting couple. Finch had a reputation for being a hard-drinking hell raiser of the same caliber as Richard Burton and Peter O’Toole and Vivien found his unconventional good looks and rugged sexuality invigorating. On location in Ceylon, off the coast of her native India, the humid, nostalgic atmosphere exacerbated her already heightened mood and it wasn’t long before she and Finch became entangled in an intense love affair.
